Lot Essay

Cf: Donald Karshan, Csaky, Paris, 1973, p. 83, fig. 3

This sculpture was referred to as 'Figure habille' by Waldemar George in the only monograph on Csaky to be published during his lifetime. George gave weight to the figure, originally sculpted by Csaky at the age of twenty-five, when he described it as 'un prisme, une phase dans l'acheminement de l'art pur...il a rsolument rompu avec l'enseignement de Rodin...il a fait table rase du pass immdiat.'
The present lot is described in a letter from the artist to the present owner's mother as one of only two casts made of the sculpture.
