Lot Essay

Panini painted a number of versions of this highly popular composition, from the 1730's onwards. The best known versions are in the Kress Collection, National Gallery of Art, Washington (K31), circa 1734, and in the Cleveland Museum, Ohio, which is signed and dated 1747 (Arisi, Gian Paolo Panini, Rome, 1986, p. 419, no. 374).
