Lot Essay

The composition, in which travellers are arranged in the foreground with a path and windmills receding into the distance, was a favourite of Jan Breughel I's and one that he repeated on numerous occasions, with differences in the details. No direct prototype is known for the present picture, although it would appear most closely to relate to the Broad landscape with a Windmill in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich (see K. Ertz, Jan Breughel der Ältere, Cologne, 1979, p. 66, fig.37).
