Original blue marbled wrappers with printed label laid down on the upper cover (some fading at edges, extremities rubbed). [ONE OF 500 COPIES]. Woolmer 9. signed by the author on the title page, with his printed name scored through. Loosely-inserted is an autograph postcard, depicting an “Angel playing hurdy-gurdy” from the Sforza Book of Hours, inscribed on the verso, “I pop this in as a Christmas greeting. We must meet again soon, Morgan [ie. E. M. Forster], 21.12.25.” The recipient of the card is unknown. Also loosely-inserted are 2 one-page autograph letters from A.N.L.Munby, both signed “Tim” [as usual], on King’s College Cambridge headed paper, the first dated 27 Jan 1969, stating, “My dear Anthony, I caught Morgan after lunch & he was in fine form & has substituted a rather wobbly signature for his name on the title page … We then got on to Bertrand Russell’s memoirs, about which he was infinitely comical. I am trying to protect him from a very serious American who is working on G.E. Moore, Russell, Keynes, the Apostles & all that & who wants to catechize him for an hour or two”; the second, dated 22 July 1969, expressing reservations about asking the author to sign more books in the light of his deteriorating health. With 2 other books by the same author, namely Alexandria: A History and a Guide (Alexandria, 1922, SIGNED by the author on the title, with his printed name scored through, with an autograph note loosely-inserted stating, “Dear Tim [ie. Munby], Oh dear and oh dear – Have you the address of staunch little Miss FitzPatrick who is doing a bibliography … Morgan” and Pharos and Pharillon (Richmond, Hogarth Press, 1923); together with 4 books from the library of E.M. Forster, each with his label, and each inscribed by their authors (G. Lowes Dickinson, Robert Allan Furness, Mulk Raj Anand and R. K. Narayan) to Forster. Also included in the lot is an extensive 2-page letter from A.N.L. Munby to Anthony Hobson, on King’s College Cambridge headed paper, dated 2 Dec. 1971, on the subject of E. M. Forster’s library labels and much else, mainly of a bibliographical nature.
