Lot Essay

The present four plates along with the following 'Pot A Jus' are from a large service 'à rubans verts, given by King Louis XV of France to Empress Maria-Theresa of Austria in 1758. The entire service was made at a cost of 24,768 livres and the majority of the service is still in the Royal Hofburg Palace, Vienna. For a full discussion of this service, see D. Peters, Sèvres Plates and Services of the 18th Century, Little Berkhamsted, 2005, vol. II, pp. 307-308. François Binet is recorded as a painter of flowers at the factory from 1750-1775. Charles-Louis Méreaud le jeune is recorded as a painter of flowers and patterns at the factory from 1756-1780.
