Lot Essay

Francesco Bissolo is recorded as an assistant of the pre-eminent Venetian painter of the cinquecento, Giovanni Bellini, in his work on the Doge's Palace, Venice, in 1492. Bellini's style proved the formative influence on Bissolo and the present picture demonstrates that influence, also showing the extreme softness of Bissolo's modelling that is characteristic of his oeuvre.
