Lot Essay

The present work by Francesco Brini (or 'del Brina') is close to a Madonna with Child and Donor recently on the art market (see Alessandro Nesi, 'Ombre e luci su Francesco Brina', Arte Cristiana, 94, August 2006, pp. 261-76, no. 835, illustrated). Though the name Brini was in the past used to refer to a wide range of stylistically inconsistent works, in recent years Brini's characteristically solid forms and thin, gilt-edged haloes have been more securely identified.

We are grateful to Mr. Everett Fahy for suggesting the attribution to Brini on the basis of a photograph.
