Lot Essay

Lojacono, born in Palermo, studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples probably at the same time as Filippo Palizzi. (An example of whose work is also in this sale - on the facing page.) He became an accomplished landscape painter and was influenced by the Neapolitan school, and artists such as Gigante. From 1862 onwards he based himself at Agrigento and later became honorary Professor of the Istituto di Belli Arti in Naples. He is now considered to be one of the foremost Sicilian landscape painters and this is lot is a fine example of his work, possibly from his Agrigento period.
