Lot Essay

We are grateful to Professor Nicola Spinosa for confirming the attribution to Francesco Solimena on the basis of photographs. He suggests that the present picture is a bozzetto for the The Marriage of the Virgin, which, with its pendant The Annuciation, is in the Church of Gesù delle Monache, in Naples (see F. Bologna, Francesco Solimena, Naples, 1958, p. 259, fig. 99). Spinosa dates the pictures to shortly after 1693 and notes the underlying influence of Mattia Pretti.
