From around 1910 Francis Cadell became particularly fond of painting interiors often incorporating elegantly dressed women either seated or standing by a table within an Edwardian interior.
This series of portraits executed between 1910-1927 best illustrates the quality of Cadell's work, not only as a Colourist, but also as a superb technician of paint, creating an elaborate and highly complex effect.
The model for this painting is probably Miss Don Wauchope, an Edinburgh model who assisted both Peploe and Cadell in many of their pictures. She is seen seated facing the painter in a fashionable black velvet suit decorated with a single pink rose, broad hat, white gloves with her figure profiled against an off-white background holding a fan. In the foreground an arrangement of fruit, a decanter, a wine bottle and other objects appear simply placed on a white tablecloth and highlighting the play of light from the left, and reflecting the gilt rimmed cup.
During the 1920's Cadell's approach to figurative painting became more formalised as he reduced the complexity of these works often to a single figure within a highly colourful interior. Although the degree of vision and spontaneity of touch was reduced, this was replaced by an equally successful decorative effect which culminated in Interior: the Orange Blind, (Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum).
