Lot Essay

A figure, portrait and landscape painter, after studying at Shipley's he entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1769; he eloped to Dublin with the wife of fellow artist J.A. Gresse, but was forced to return to England. He subsequently married his model Clara Maria Leigh. Many of his works were engraved, most notably the Cries of London.
