FRANÇOIS BOUCHER, TWO WOMEN WITH TWO CHILD, BLACK AND WHITE CHALK ON BLUE PAPER, SIGNED AND DATED

François Boucher’s studies of women at work – returning from the market, washerwomen carrying baskets, with children, sometimes accompanied by a dog – are characteristic for thework of the artist’s last years. A study of Washerwomen and a young boy playing with a dog, also dated 1769, using a similar technique on blue paper, was recently at the sale Artcurial, Paris, 27 March 2019, lot 247. Another similar sheet in black chalk, heightened with white, depicting a Young mother seen from behind with her children, one of whom she also carries on her left shoulder, is at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lyon (inv. B. 1043P; see François Boucher, hier et aujourd’hui, exhib. cat., Paris, Musée du Louvre, 2003-2004, no. 68, ill.).

Lot Essay

Ces études de femmes au travail (retour de marché, lavandières portant des paniers) avec enfants, parfois accompagnées d’un chien, sont caractéristiques des dernières années de création de François Boucher. Une étude de Lingères et jeune garçon jouant avec un chien, également datée de 1769, de technique similaire sur un papier bleu, est passée en vente récemment chez Artcurial (27 mars 2019, lot 247). Une autre feuille comparable à la pierre noire, rehaussée de blanc, représentant une Jeune mère de dos avec ses enfants, dont l’un qu’elle porte aussi sur son épaule gauche, est conservée au musée des beaux-arts de Lyon (inv. B. 1043P ; François Boucher, hier et aujourd’hui, Paris, musée du Louvre, cat. exp., 2003-2004, n° 68).
