Dobson's early experience and study was in Cornwall, Scotland and London. Enormously impressed by the 1910 and 1912 Post-Impressionist exhibitions, he turned increasingly from painting to sculpture after service in the First World War.
During the 1920s and 1930s Frank Dobson gained an outstanding reputation; the monumental dignity of his work was in the tradition of Maillol and, like him, Dobson found the female figure the most satisfactory subject for three dimensional composition.
