Lot Essay

This painting and the work in the following lot both depict the British Mediterranean Fleet in Turkish waters, probably during a goodwill mission sometime after the end of the Great War. In the early 1920's, the fleet included six battleships - Iron Duke, Emperor of India, Benbow, Ajax, Centurion and King George V - some of which are almost certainly portrayed here.
