For the subject see Matthew, XIV, vv. 13-15, Mark, X, vv. 13-16, Luke XVIII, vv. 15-17.
This is a variant of the central part of a horizontal composition by Floris (present whereabouts unknown) that has been compressed to conform to an oval format. For Floris' painting, known in two versions, see C. van de Velde, Frans Floris etc., Brussels, 1975, pp. 191-192, nos. 41-42, figs. 11 and 13.
No painting by Floris is listed in van der Doort's catalogue of the collection of King Charles I (for which see Abraham van der Doort's catalogue, etc., ed. O. Millar, The Walpole Society 1958-1960, XXXVII, 1960). However van der Doort's catalogue of King Charles's collection was never completed and the present lot may be identical with no. 288 of the inventory of pictures at Hampton Court made on 3-5 October 1649: 'Christ Calling the Children to him', which was sold to B Baker on 1 February 1652/3 at a value of 20 (see 'Inventories and Valuations of the King's Goods, 1649-1657', The Walpole Society, 1970-1972, XLIII, 1972, pp. 186 and 203).
