Lot Essay

Both studies appear to have been executed for the large panorama depicted the battlefield of Borodino.
After the execution and success of his large canvas, The defence of Sebastopol, Colonel V. A. Afanassiev suggested in 1910 that Rubo should execute a large panorama depicting the battlefield of Borodino, one of the main battles of the 1812 Patriotic War with the French.
Completed in 1912, the large panorama (14 x 115.5 m.) was exhibited at the same time as the exhibition commemorating the Patriotic War in Moscow (see lot 258 for a copy of the exhibition catalogue).
