Lot Essay

Frantz Charlet made his debut exhibiting in Antwerp aged 15. From this early foundation he would work with Jan Portaels before moving to Paris to study under Jules Lefebvre, Carolus Duran and Jean-Léon Gérôme at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts between 1880-82. His painting tours took him throughout Europe, during which time he most notably stayed with Reginald John "Rex" Whistler in Holland. In the present lot, the heat of the Monaco promenade is accentuated by the wide parasols and steep-falling shadows, whilst movement and joviality are brought to the composition through the boy playing with his dog in the lower half of the painting.
