He quickly achieved fame as a painter of fine portraits and genre scenes. He came to be seen as an important exponent of the Munich school of painters and was made president of their Academy in 1883.

Lot Essay

The subject of this portrait may be a younger version of Franzi whom Defregger painted in 1880 (see pg 298 of the monograph by Hans Peter Defregger - Rosenheimer Verlagshaus). The sitter may also be a version of no.68 Tiroler Knabe in the Defregger monograph by Udolf Rofenburg. (This is also illustrated on pg 321 of the Rosenheimer book.)
