Lot Essay

"In galleries and parks, exhibitions and urban passageways, within the framework of institutions and in the triviality of the everyday world, Franz West puts together parts of the soul - terrifying and sweet, majestic and fragile, repellent and tender - and puts us back together in his work as in a great patchwork quilt: passstcke, sofas, chairs, movements, dyes, postures, carpets, videos, gestures, perspectives, people, colors and feelings, things and passions like the image in the tapestry of the world that gives us meaning." (D. Zacharopoulos, 'The Soul is the Body's Envelope', Parkett, no.37, 1993, p.64)

As with many of West's sculptures, the audience is invited to play an interactive role. "And it is only when the viewer connects with the work, becoming both participator and collaborator, that somehow the gap is filled and the work is completed - or in the artist's words, 'Go ahead and grab. The fullfillment of being is in your hands.'" (C. Freedman, 'Franz West', Freize, no.20, Feb.95, p.55.)
