This is a superb example of the artist's Russian period. Dubois worked in St Petersburg between 1804 and 1818 and was a member of the Academy. A rectangular miniature which may depict the same sitter was sold Sotheby's, London, 14 December 1995, lot 87 from the collection of Mrs Humphrey Brooke (Countess Nathalie Benckendorff), described as 'A lady, possibly a member of the Benckendorff family'.
