Lot Essay

This drawing is one of the many studies made by Leighton for his masterpiece and, unlike lot 7, dates from the period c. 1886-8 when he was at work on the canvas itself. The two main studies are for the women who draw water from a well at the right of the composition. The right-hand figure, her right arm raised, reappears in a drawing sold at Sotheby's Belgravia on 7 May 1974, lot 4 (illustrated in catalogue).

For a composition sketch for Captive Andromache, see lot 7.
