Lot Essay

Apparently an early drawing, possibly connected with the Dalziel Bible. Leighton made nine designs for this ambitious project during the years 1863-4, including a powerful rendering of Cain and Abel in which Cain is seen overcome with remorse after slaying his brother. The composition is reproduced in George and Edward Dalziel, The Brothers Dalziel, 1901, p. 239, and the scheme is discussed in L. and R. Ormond, Lord Leighton, 1975, pp. 57-8
