Lot Essay

Inspired by the sculpture of Marsyas in the Uffizi (P.P. Bober and R.O. Rubinstein, Renaissance Artists and antique Sculpture. A Handbook of Sources, London, 1986, no. 32), this was most probably drawn by an artist travelling in Italy, trained by Carle van Loo.
