Lot Essay

The composition of this painting derives from the celebrated Madonna and Child with the Infant Saint John the Baptist by Raphael, named La Belle Jardinière in the 19th century. Raphael's original, now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, was acquired in Siena on behalf of King Francis I of France (1494-1547).
