Lot Essay

This Winterlandschaft was almost certainly executed in the winter of 1909 when Münter and Kandinsky were staying in the village Kochel at the Staffelsee. Living in Munich, they both set off by train and sled on 20 February to visit the Russian composer Thomas von Hartmann and his wife Olga Archádina for two weeks at their house in the alpine town of Kochel, near Murnau. During their visit, Kandinsky and Münter produced several snow landscapes of the village and its surroundings. The palette Münter uses in Winterlandschaft relates this painting to various other works that she produced during this productive period. With its cool tonality and soft colours, Winterlandschaft is a work that magically conveys the mood of a crisp, cold winter day.
