Lot Essay

Boisclair, who knew the composition through Chatelain's print, expressed doubts as to whether a version of the picture in the Morandotti collection, Rome (op. cit., no. B.13, fig. 468) corresponded with that owned by Bragge, commenting on its 'facture' and on minor compositional variations, and arguing that the picture in question might be a copy: the reemergence of the present canvas confirms her view. She recognised that a small circular work in Munich (op. cit., R.9) is an 'imitation assez mdiocre' of the present (Bragge) picture.

Benjamin Booth formed a notable collection of pictures including an unequalled series of works by Richard Wilson: the collection was significantly enlarged by his grandson, Richard Ford, author of the Handbook of Spain.
