'I remember that I painted the picture in the studio, from a sketch I did while looking across Piccadilly from the window of the upstairs café in Woolworths. The store is no longer there, in fact much later, in 1979, this Woolworths branch was the scene of a serious and tragic fire. The view of Piccadilly with the sunken garden is now very different - still a public space but now much more elaborate, not least as trams have made a comeback!'
