Lot Essay

Tooth's Gallery held a show of Tibble's work in 1946, featuring figures in interiors in the manner of Degas and Vuillard. This prompted Raymond Mortimer to place him 'in the front rank of living English painters' (see D. Buckman, The Dictionary of Artists in Britain since 1945, Bristol, 1998, p. 1191).
