Lot Essay

Drawn in 1925, the present sheet is a costume study, probably for a theatrical production. A painter and illustrator, Barbier was among the leading illustrators of the Art Deco movement, providing fashion plates for some of the leading couturiers of the period such as Paul Poiret (1879-1944), Jeanne Lanvin (1867-1946) and Madeleine Vionnet (1876-1975)
