Lot Essay

James Sparkes of the Indian Civil Service was the brother of Mrs Brodie and uncle of Sophia Price, Castle Madoc, Brecon.
Williamson/Engleheart (loc.cit.) record that Mr Sparkes sat to Engleheart in 1790.
Another miniature of the sitter by George Engleheart was sold Sotheby's, London, 10 December 1946, lot 93 and a miniature of Mrs Sparkes by George Engleheart was also sold in these rooms on 18 May 1965, lot 39.
