When Breitner arrived in Amsterdam in 1886, the city was in a crucial stage in its development. The hustle and bustle of a city in turmoil could be felt everywhere. The Towncouncil was developing and stimulating private enterprise and factories. Iron works, diamond factories and beer breweries were sprouting up. Breitner captured these changes in his oeuvre. Daily life was a cherished subject. The present lot shows an isolated moment in time: anonymous figures walking on the Rokin. The confident and powerfull way in which the artist has used his medium to render an impression of this street scene is a good example of his talent.
