Lot Essay

It is believed that this painting was acquired by Charles John Canning, 1st Earl Canning KG, GCB, PC (1812-1862), Governor-General of India (1856-1862) or his wife Charlotte Canning, Countess Canning (1817-1861), during their time in India. Charlotte herself was a keen amateur water-colourist of some repute and recognised as one of the most prolific female artists in India. Charlotte died of malaria in 1861 and is buried in Barrackpore, the residence of the Viceroy, her husband dying several months later shortly after his return to England in 1862.
The Cannings were connected to the Lascelles through marriage. Charles John Canning's niece, Lady Elizabeth Joanna de Burgh (1826-1854) married Henry Lascelles, 4th Earl of Harewood.
