Lot Essay

Morland visited the Isle of Wight on several occasions between 1790 and 1804. These trips proved the inspiration of numerous coastal scenes of fishermen, smugglers and shipwrecks. Another example is Coastal Scene with Smugglers, 1790, now in Philadelphia Museum of Art.
