Of those portraits recorded by Raymond Lister as having been executed by Richmond in 1842, at least two might be identified with the present watercolour and suggest that the sitter may be Master Porcher or Master Russell (R. Lister, George Richmond, A Critical Biography, pp. 168 and 170, nos. 87 and 122). Richmond was paid £12.12 for each portrait.
The year 1842 marked the high point of Richmond's career as a portraitist. His eminent sitters included Prince George of Cambridge, the Bishop of Ripon, Mrs Darwin, and John Ruskin with whom he worked closely.
