Lot Essay

This typical product of Cole's last years probably relates to studies made near Abinger in Surrey, the subject of his RA diploma work Autumn Morning, eventually submitted in 1891. His ledger records that it was commenced on 24 December 1889 and finished on 13 January 1890. Cole had become known as a painter of cornfields with Harvest Time (1860), and returned to the subject periodically throughout his career. This Cornfield was sold to the dealer Arthur Tooth for the substantial sum of 250gne.
