Lot Essay

The multiple peaks in this work are very suggestive of Martinique, the scene of much activity throughout the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.

Very little is recorded about George Webster except that early on in his career he visited West Africa, views of which were exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1801 to 1806. Later on, he turned to naval subjects, many of which were engraved.
