Lot Essay

Originally projected to be a very exclusive production of only ten examples of which this is number 1, the Metasonic has never went beyond this piece probably due to its complexity and intricate design. Upon recent confirmation from Gerald Genta, this timepiece is absolutely unique and one-of-a-kind.

Without a doubt Gerald Genta has left an enduring mark in the history of watchmaking. At the age of 27, Genta discovered his enormous talent for the designing of timepieces, consequently inventing the profession of a "watch designer", a vocation in which he immediately excelled. Amongst the world's most famous wristwatches designed by the incomparable designer are celebrated icons such as Audemars Piguet's "Royal Oak" and Patek Philippe's "Nautilus" as well as the "Da Vinci" by IWC and Cartier's "Pasha".

Undeniably the world's most complex Grande Sonnerie wristwatch and an epitome of Gerald Genta's ingenuity and artistic flair, the Arena Metasonic Sonnerie was the last creation totally overseen by the great Gerald Genta and raised his work to the realm of perfection.
Grande Sonnerie watches are a deep-rooted tradition at Gerald Genta which has been producing extraordinarily complex wristwatch models since 1994. Striking watches are often viewed as the highest form of pure watchmaking artistry and the caliber GG 31001 in the Arena Metasonic Sonnerie is the ultimate accumulation of more than 15 years of research, tradition and engineering. Not content with the existing metals to fully enhance the sounds of the sonnerie functions, Genta created a special alloy (Magsonic) that optimizes sound passage without compromising the acoustic qualities. Created with approximately 850 parts and more than a year to build, the watch not only allows the owner to choose between the Grande, Petite or silent/chime modes, it is endowed with the Westminster chime playing a different tune for each quarter and a one minute tourbillon. Furthermore, the watch could well be the first Grande Sonnerie watch that is water resistant.
