Hollstein's catalogue of the prints of the de Heer family gives the composition of the present sheet to Gerrit Adriaensz., but so closely comparable is their draughtsmanship and even signature that an attribution to his son Guilliam could also be suggested. Indeed another version of the composition, in Paris, which shows minor differences to the print, is given by Frits Lugt to Guilliam (F. Lugt, École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris, Inventaire Général des Dessins des Écoles du Nord, Paris, 1950, I, no. 270). The question of differentiating the hands was discussed in detail by Franklin D. Robinson, Selections from the Collection of Dutch Drawings of Maida & George Abrams, exhib. cat., Wellesley College Museum, and elsewhere, 1969, under no. 23.
