We are grateful to Franco Canepa for confirming the attribution to Gherardo Poli. He has suggested that they originally formed part of a series of four pictures, the other two now being in the Museo Bardini, Florence (formerly of the Corsi Collection, see F. Canepa, Gherardo e Giuseppe Poli: la pittura di capriccio nella Toscana di primo Settecento, Pisa, 2002, nos. 38-9).
