Lot Essay

The recto is a preliminary study for Baglione's painting The Repentance of Saint Peter (1606) in the Galleria Sabauda, Turin (M. Smith O'Neil, Giovanni Baglione: Artistic Reputation in Renaissance Rome, Cambridge, 2002, p. 102, pl. 56). It shows an earlier stage in the story than that finally used in the painting: in this drawing, Peter is still protesting his ignorance in the face of the serving girl's questions, although the rooster is already sketched in at upper left.
