The Family of Darius before Alexander

We are grateful to Professor Francesca Zava-Boccazzi for confirming the attribution on the basis of photographs. She regards the present picture as the prime treatment of a composition known in two other versions (oral communication). The first of these is the picture sold at Sotheby's, London, 7 December 1994, lot 211, regarded by Zava-Boccazzi as by an artist from the studio; and the second, the picture in the Galleria Nazionale, Parma (inv. no. 1073), published by Zava-Boccazzi in 1979 as autograph (see F. Zava-Boccazzi, Pittoni, Venice, 1979, p. 153, no. 154, fig. 461), but later qualified by her to a studio work. The attribution has also been endorsed by Professor Bernard Aikema.
