Sale room notice
The central section of the present drawing was engraved, in reverse, by Matteo Mingarini (1603-1669) (P. Bagni, Guercino e i suoi incisori, Rome, 1988, fig. 123). The composition is derived from an anonymous early 16th Century terracotta bas relief of the Madonna del Presepio now in the Church of San Sebastiano e Rocco in Guercino's native Cento (P. Bagni, op. cit., fig. 122). We are grateful to Mr Gianni Fava for drawing our attention to this connection.
