GIRAULT DE PRANGEY, Joseph Philibert (1804-1892). Monuments Arabes d'Egypte, de Syrie, d'Asie Mineure. Paris: Lemercier for the author and A. Hauser, 1846.

[?]Parts 1-6 in one volume, 2° (565 x 382mm). 12p. letterpress, 24 lithographic plates by Bichebois, Ciceri, Dauzats, Fichot, A. Mathieu, Monthelier, with figures by Bayot, after Girault de Prangey. (Spotting to plates, one plate browned, final text text leaf browned on verso.) Late 19th-century half morocco (rubbed), original printed buff wrapper bound in as title. Provenance: William Arthur, 6th Duke of Portland -- [collation note, signed A.E.G. and dated 26.3.53 on front pastedown].

RARE. The Bibliothèque National, Paris, has the first part only (GR Fol-O3B-426). As the title printed on the wrapper states, this work was intended to form a suite with Girault de Prangey's Monuments Arabes de Cordoue, Séville et Grenade (1836-39). The printed word "Livraison", directly above the imprint, has the letter 's' and the numbers '1-6' added in manuscript. The six parts may, in fact, represent the only parts published of a larger projected work, hence the incomplete nature of the contents of the present volume in which the letterpress is restricted to a description of plates 4, 5, 9, 25 and 26, 58 and 59, and 60, not all of which are present. The 24 plates, based on Girault de Prangey's daguerreotypes, are bound in the following irregular sequence: 1, 4, 5, 12, 13, 14, 41, 22, no number, 25, 48, 38, 56, 70, 72, 80, 59, 60, 84, 87, 88, 98, 95, 100. The sale of daguerreotypes of architectural subjects from his archive at Christie's London in May 2003 and May 2004, has led to recognition of Girault de Prangey as one of the great early photographers. Not in Abbey Travel; Atabey; Blackmer; or Brunet; owing to uncertainty of collation, sold as a collection of plates not subject to return.
