8° (235 x 150mm). With half-title. (Some spotting, some soiling and staining on a few leaves.) Contemporary black half roan over marbled boards, spine stamped in gilt and blind (hinges starting).

FIRST EDITION OF GOGOL'S BEST KNOWN WORK. ‘One of the great novels of nineteenth-century Russia' (Fekula). This first part of Gogol's famous satire was printed in an edition of 2400 copies with money borrowed from Pogodin.
