Lot Essay

The windmill depicted in this painting was erected in Jersey City, New Jersey some time after 1806. Isaac Edge received the windmill as a gift from his father in England in appreciation of his success in the New World. Isaac Edge, who arrived in America in 1803, established the mill for grinding grain. The mill was moved to Town Harbor, Long Island in 1839 and then to Southhold, Long Island where it remained until it was destroyed by fire in 1870.
