Lot Essay

"CHANGES IN OUR LIVES LEAD TO DREAMS BASED ON NOSTALGIA, AS OPPOSED TO A VISION FOR THE FUTURE." - GUO JIN
Guo Jin is one of the popular Chinese artists in the 90s. His children mitigate the seriousness and complexity of joy mixes with pain in the adult world. His endeavours to remind viewers of the essential beauty in simplicity are exemplified in Dawn. No.17 (Lot 224). Two children are placed in whimsical wonderland, sitting on a tree with seemingly harmless baby pandas, a monkey, birds and a raccoon. The scratched surfaces of bare and barren branches and implicative lines exhibit his wilful vulnerability and bluntness of his psyche. The warm hues are ingeniously scraped with his dexterity control of the contour and tone, the flat background juxtapose with colourful textures in a contrasting manner, giving the prominence of this figures' three-dimensionality.
His figures compose a relatively vast and overwhelming pictorial space, bursting out of the brims. His textures that carve out the silhouette of the figures seem to shed light on the memorable past, reminding the beholder a sentiment of reminiscence.
