Lot Essay

Mangu explores the theme of the bond between man and nature, considering the high regard that Indonesians have for their environment, depicting their close, symbiotic relationship with an overwhelming volcanic mountain. Mangu pulls together strong line, bold form and an earthy palette to create an emotive composition that is both realist and expressionist. "There is something in nature that cannot be perceived but whose presence can be keenly felt... All of my creative work is at base an attempt to capture, reveal, and translate this 'something' into a visual-aesthetic language." (Artist's statement, 2000)
