Lot Essay

The quiet, predominantly female congregation of the Meudon church was one of Gwen John's favourite subjects. She executed many watercolours of the subject from the early 1910s until she ceased working twenty years later. She would sit unobtrusively at the back of the church sketching in pencil, adding watercolour and bodycolour later in the studio. The resultant works are both profound and intimate.
