Lot Essay
The resistance to the ethic of creating artworks with its representational meaning is what makes Handiwirman's art interesting and provoking. At first glance, the air conditioner in the work comes right at the viewer. The shapes of the forms beneath the air conditioner are abstract and he experiments with positioning these subjects in a variety of appearances to stimulate different visual reactions. He had created a similar work to the present lot, only to have the space between the two black forms in the foreground of the work replaced with a different form and colour. Two points can be observed from this work. With his experience in handling materials for his three-dimensional works, he is still interested in maintaining a textural quality in his forms. The black forms look soft and smooth, almost cloud-like compared to the staid structure of the air conditioner. He is also exploring the relationship between a known object, the air conditioner, with a more unknown form, testing the receiver's perceived sensibilities of the two objects. Handiwirman further includes a nuance of contrasting colour into the composition, adding a new dimension for the mental perception.
Handiwirman's chosen method of painting facilitates a unique dialogue between the viewer and the artist. His interest in experimenting with referential nuances of objects or the lack of, is attracting the curiosity of collectors.
