Contemporary artist Hang Chunhui challenges aesthetics standards of this day and age by applying conscientious, sophisticated Gongbi techniques to conventional ink art mediums; the poise and restraint in his works are thus striking and powerful.
The highly detailed brushstrokes in conventional Gongbi seem to dissolve in Hang's piece: they are substituted for multiple gradations, and the result was an illusory halo. Hang Chunhui approaches the ritual relationships between individuals, as well as between people and materials, through the space and furnishings in the memory. The patterns of the carpet which are half cut by the edge seem to be inviting the viewer into the painting. However, the artist intentionally adopts the stiff and vertical composition with the precise geometric elements, demonstrating a solemn and restrained atmosphere. The past, presence, as well as the future, will eventually become the inerasable memories.
